  1. Use Romero (https://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/) to decide when and how you upload the pdf file (and which pdf file). No longer needed - Lucris shows it.
  2. Work with file Other/Jobb/publications-to-lucris.docx
  3. Go to portal.research.lu.se.
  4. Login for staff (a bit down on the page).

Den 23 mars stänger LUP för inmatning av publikationer. LUP ersätts av LUCRIS, som öppnar för inmatning 11 april. I LUCRIS ska även annan forskningsinformation läggas in.

As most of you probably know, all publications resulting from research funded by Vetenskapsrådet (VR) now have to be published under so-called open access (OA) licensing, meaning that they should be made available to the community free of any subscription charges within six months from the publication date. Since this matter seems to be slightly complicated, and we (Joakim and Per) spent some time looking things up, we thought it would be nice to share the information with everybody in order to prevent too much overlapping work being done!

In summary, there are three different ways to fulfill the OA requirements by VR:

1. Publish in a journal which is fully OA. Since there are still very few such journals, most of them with low impact, this is probably not (yet) a feasible alternative for most people.

2. Buy OA for your article in a non-OA journal. This is possible for the great majority of publishers, although it is usually rather expensive (1000 - 3000 USD per article).

3. "Self-archiving". This means that the article is published in a (usually non-OA) journal, at the same time as being manually published in an independent database, such as arXiv or Lund University Publications (LUP). This alternative, however, requires that the publisher of the original article allows for the article to also be made freely available through another channel. If they do, this alternative is free of charge at the same time as being in accordance with the OA conditions of both VR and the publisher.

Quite obviously, the third alternative is the most economically appealing one. A good database listing all common publishers and detailed information about their policies regarding self-archiving is "Sherpa / RoMEO" (see below). For example, ACS (Langmuir et al.) are very restrictive when it comes to self-archiving, making it necessary to pay the OA fee of 2000 USD, whereas RSC (Soft Matter et al.) and AIP (Journal of Chemical Physics) are much more flexible.

More info (largely overlapping that given above) can be found via the links below.

Template letter to editor

Subject: Self-archiving

Dear Editor,
Since January 1st 2010, researchers financed by the Swedish Research Council are required to publish all articles with open access.
Therefore, I am writing to ask for permission to self-archive a copy of my article (publication title …), published in (publication name, volume, issue, pages). The copy will be made freely available through Lund University Publications (http://www.lu.se/lund-university/research/publications-and-dissertations ), the institutional repository at Lund University 6 months after publication, as requested by the Swedish Research Council.
Best Regards,
Ulf Ryde
